Gorky 17 ** Description |
 |
The year is 2008. NATO intelligence reports that, for some unknown reason, the Russian army has destroyed one of its so-called 'secret cities' known by the code word 'Gorky 17.' This exact replica of an American city was used to train the best Russian spies during the Cold War. 'The city's been deserted since the collapse of the Iron Curtain,' comes the reassuring answer from the Kremlin. 'Now that we are friends, we no longer need such monuments to mistrust.'
But NATO commanders aren't buying this PR exercise - they know that Gorky 17 had another, far more important purpose. This was where the Soviet Union conducted its most secret military experiments. The following year, as the first step toward Poland's integration into NATO, a contingent of multinational troops enters the ruined city. Poking through the rubble, some scouts discover an old laboratory complex. Further investigations reveal little, so the soldiers proceed downtown, through seemingly empty streets. But ... strange things start happening! Suddenly, they find themselves surrounded by hideously deformed creatures Ð parts of their bodies look human, while other parts resemble a horrifying mixture of animal and insect. Something went terribly awry here. Despite the best efforts of NATO officials, word spreads of the discovery, as reporters fly in from all over the globe to witness the ultimate freak show. CNN soon announces plans to broadcast live via satellite. NATO is in danger of completely losing control of the situation. Destroying the city is out of the question, so troops are sent in to hermetically seal off the area, which is promptly declared top secret and off-limits to all but a select few. A team of three highly-skilled specialists, led by a Canadian named Cole Sullivan is sent in by NATO commanders to discover the facts behind this startling turn of events. Will they discover what went on in Gorky 17? And what awaits them should they delve too deeply into the past? And, last but not least, will they survive the mission?
Gameplay
The hero in Gorky 17 is Cole Sullivan, a fascinatingly complex character which also combines the pure excitement of battle with the element of surprise and exploration found in adventures. In addition to fighting turn-based battles against realistic monsters, he can also shoot off locks, pick up newspapers, converse with other characters and even solve some tricky puzzles! Basically, Gorky 17 combines the best of the genres to create the best game possible.
Gorky 17 doesn't just play different Ð it even looks and feels different. It has moved beyond the old approach to RPG (i.e. pseudo non-linearity, lots of stats and random, repetitive encounters with monsters), and into the far more interesting Japanese-style realm. This approach is only partially linear, has simplified stats, a more intuitive user interface and offers a treasure trove of subtle touches and small details. Graphic excellence, a movie-like plot and better use of fantasy/sci-fi features (not just rehashes of the typical skeletons, demons and radioactive mutants) round out this unique experience. But don't worry, we haven't gone too far out on the fantasy limb - Gorky 17 is a European game with realistic characters and settings, a horror/sci-fi story and some of the best gameplay mechanisms anywhere.
Gorky 17 is a mixture of the best of several genres. From adventure games it takes exploration and tight character-environment interaction, which not only puts you into an active role, but even lets you influence the way the story unfolds. From RPGs it implements the character development factor and simplifies the statistics. by only showing the important data on screen when required. The character attributes are easy to understand. The strategy aspect kicks in during the battles, which will really force you to do some thinking just to stay alive (to say nothing of progressing!). Finally, it adds dozens of 3D characters and some truly amazing monsters created with detailed textures and a skeletal animation system. Add in state-of-the-art rendered graphics and cutscenes, real-time 3D special effects, plus the perfect soundtrack and there you have it, Gorky 17 for the Macintosh!
Game-play-Highlights:
- Combines the best of three genres: exploration and interaction with your environment (adventure), character development (RPG), engrossing battles with a wide variety of enemies (strategy)
- Adventure elements are smoothly woven into the strategic battles, to create an exciting world and get you intensely involved in the scheme of things. Here you're not just an observer - you're truly part of the action!
- The horror/s-f story, along with the in-game events and spectacular Softimage-created FMV cut scenes, is central to the game. The plot is realistic and rich, with riveting twists and turns that will keep you glued to your chair
- The user interface is powerful and packed with features, yet intuitive and easy to learn
- An excellent soundtrack lends the perfect atmosphere to each scene
- With countless subtle touches, little secrets and random events the game stays suspenseful and fun - no matter how often you play
Technology
In Gorky 17, 3D polygonal characters are transparently mixed with 2D rendered backgrounds. The characters have an extremely high polygon count (from 800 to 2000 polygons per mesh) and are animated using a skeletal animation system which reduces memory needed, gives smoother animation, and increased flexibility. All characters have extremely detailed textures, so they look great from a distance or up close. Gorky 17 has real-time light-and-shadow system. In this scheme all characters cast one or more shadows, depending on the light sources. For example, a character will have a short black shadow cast by a nearby lamp, and a long, almost transparent shadow cast by a lamp farther away. Like everything else in Gorky 17, the shadows are quite realistic, indeed, almost pixel-perfect. They even bend on different surfaces. No boring black circles on the ground here!
The rendered artwork of the backgrounds is not tiled Ð each and every location is unique and a living environment - the backgrounds are animated. Windows open, curtains burn, water flows, birds fly Ð the whole world practically springs to life. Plus, there are 3D weather conditions like gusts of wind that blow leaves across the street, or 'adjustable' rainfall which can come from many different directions. The game has some spectacular weapons effects. Monsters burn, rockets leave smoke trails, grenades explode - in 3D! It uses particle based explosions, multiple transparencies and all the latest 3D goodies you can think of!
Technology highlights:
- Realistic 3D characters designed with an ultrahigh polygon count, flexible skeletal animations and extremely detailed texture mapping
- State-of-the-art rendered backgrounds with 'bird's eye' view, zoom-ins and variable camera angles for selected areas
- A 'living' environment with impressive 3D weather effects like rain, storms, lightning and wind, plus hundreds of background animations
- A fascinating three dimensional light-and-shadow system. There are as many shadows as there are light sources, character shadows bend over different surfaces, and characters can hide in the dark
- Some spectacular 3D effects for weapons usage, along with particle-based explosions, multiple transparencies and physical interaction with the character(s)
