The Charts for June 2001
What a surprising month June has turned out to be. We finally saw the
eclipse of The Sims titles in the face of quality new releases. Myst
III Exile stole the top spot last month with only a few days sales.
This month it held on to that position, but only just. The surprise was
the challenger was Diablo II Lord of Destruction. In only three
days, and with almost no pre-orders it's sales nearly surpassed the
monthly sales of Myst III Exile. Diablo II LOD debuts at No 2 and is
one of the fast selling titles in the history of MacGold Direct.
June saw other releases; Escape from Monkey Island finally
made it, officially, to the UK. It took a respectable No 3 position, but
many people had already bought the game on import from us in previous
months. June was clearly a month for add-ons; after the success of
Diablo II LOD we see that the No 4 spot is taken by the new Baldurs
Gate Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack from GraphSim. This is
currently exclusive in the UK from MacGold Direct and is an
official UK release (not an import) as we are a UK distributor
for the title. The Sims and Livin Large continue to amaze
with their longevity in fifth and sixth places; no doubt we'll see them
bob up the table when the next expansion pack, House Party is released at the end of July. Another
new release appears at No 9, Tony Hawks; the sales of this title
are effected by the subject matter, but the graphics and gameplay are
great and many people will miss out because skateboarding isn't so
popular over in the UK, which is a shame.
Despite the new releases
plenty of old-timers still make it into June's chart. Age of
Empires has had renewed sales, possibly on the heels of the
announcement of a Oct/Nov release of the sequel Age of Empires II The Age of Kings. Unreal
Tournament has done well to appear in the top 20 twice! Sales
are obviously helped by our price being so low in comparison to other UK
sellers and that the Game of the Year Edition is only availble on
import. Two other re-entries worthy of note are Star Wars Episode 1
Racer, sales are helped by the fact it is a jewel cased version at a
substantially reduce price, and Starship Titanic which we have
found again, this time with a free strategy guide
Finally it's
good to see more sales of Alien Crossfire now the price has come
down. This is the expansion set for Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri and makes it a much better
game. Again sales are helped by it being exclusive to MacGold in
the UK.
