The July 2001 Charts

July was dominated by the Diablo II Lord of Destruction expansion pack. It's release also lifted it's parent title, Diablo II into the top ten. June's strong titles were eclipsed by this remarkable release, although Myst III Exile's performance has been hampered by supply problems. Thanks to MacGold's pre-launch offer prices of just £29.99 each, both American McGee's Alice and Lara's 5th adventure, Tomb Raider Chronicles shot up the charts to take a comfortable second and third respectively. Escape from Monkey Island and the Baldurs Gate add-on Tales of the Sword Coast achieved respectable top ten positions in their first month of release, although the fun Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 stayed outside the chart at 21. The chart is studded with add-ons and sequels, it seems you cannot have too much of a good thing - The Sims House Party made the top ten on pre-orders alone.

4, Escape from Monkey Island
4th Guybrush Threepwood adventure, now in glorious 3D graphics. Returning from his honeymoon, he finds they have been ousted from the Governor's mansion and declared dead. And, there is something strangely familiar about the politician Charles L Charles!
5, Diablo 2
Diablo's loose again. 5 new character classes - the Amazon, Paladin, Barbarian, Sorceress and Necromancer - each with unique skills and abilities. That's 150 special abilities as each character can develop 30 unique, class specific skills and spells. 4 expansive towns complete with wilderness areas, plus dungeons, monasteries, caverns, tombs and crypts. 6, Myst 3 Exile
Features five entirely new Ages for players to explore and hours of new mysteries to uncover, and a new villain of course! A must for all Myst and Riven fans.
7, Baldurs Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast
Expansion pack for Baldurs Gate. Add new areas to explore. Features: 70 new items, 11 new wizard spells, 6 new priest spells, 17 new monsters and much, much more!
8, Unreal Tournament
Best 1st person shooter on the Mac. Play Grand Tournament or Deathmatch, each with their own maps and rules. 3D graphics and plenty of gore! MacFormat 95%

Excellent Japanese manga-style graphics. 3rd person all fighting action/adventure game. Close Quarter Combat all the way. MacFormat score 9/10 - 'Must Have'
18, Settlers 2 Veni Vidi Vici
An involving and challenging real-time strategy classic. Full detailed economic and military control is required. Addictive; just watch those Settlers work, mine and fight!
