Xmas 2001 Charts

The Xmas Number One is Age of Empires 2 Gold Edition, by an absolute mile! Congratulations to Destineer for a stunning performance by their first Mac game. No other game came remotely close to challenging this magnificent real time strategy title. However, The Sims games did very well, with all three in Top Ten positios. The Sims even took the number two spot from Championship Manager 01/02!
The Top Ten is full of strategy games, making strategy, undeniably, the most popular genre for Mac gamers in the UK. The top action title was Aliens vs Predator at number four. Top adventure/RPG was Baldurs Gate 2 Shadows of Amn at number nine; with Myst 3 Exile, surprisingly, not landing in the Top 20! Oni just crept in the Top Ten, it's sales boosted by our price cut. A latecomer, Red Faction, just missed out on a Top Ten slot despite being released just before Xmas, the price being relatively high due to its being an imported title and the fact that there have been no magazine reviews yet.

The sequel to Age of Empires. Includes the Conquerors Expansion pack which was sold separately on the PC. Classic real-time strategy game. Features medieaval civilizations, troops, technology and warfare. Campaigns and random scenario generator. Different styles of games, including against-the-clock. Excellent graphics. Will keep you engrossed for hundreds of hours. Brilliant and a bargain.

3, Championship Manager 01/02
The very latest incarnation of the top soccer management game. Updated and expanded database. Includes database editor. Improved game engine, computer AI and commenttary.Improvements include, attribute masking mode, time to be added at the end of the game is now displayed on screen, the addition of a game diary where you can make notes about players and set reminders. So when you are scouting there is no need for pencil and paper, plus you can set reminders about contract renewals etc. Loads more.
4, Aliens vs Predator Gold Edition
Chase, hide or advance in over 40 levels of the most nightmarish, chillingly detailed futuristic environment your mind could ever imagine. Now the three most ferocious species in the galaxy are pitted against one another in a battle for the ultimate prize - survival!
5, The Sims - House Party

6, The Sims - Livin Large

8, Oni
Excellent Japanese manga-style graphics. 3rd person all fighting action/adventure game. Close Quarter Combat all the way. MacFormat score 9/10 - 'Must Have'
9, Baldurs Gate 2 Shadows of Amn

11, Red Faction
The player assumes the role of Parker, a worker toiling in mines run by the Ultor Corporation far beneath the surface of Mars. The miners are suffering from inhuman living conditions and a strange, deadly disease called the Plague that is suddenly sweeping through their ranks. The miners rebel. The player's goal is to stay alive long enough to bring down Ultor and solve the mystery of the Plague.
12, Sheep
Sheep are alien explorers. But they forgot their mission and now its time to go home. Cute, addictive game with the aim of getting those sheep onto an alien spacecraft, avoiding a multitude of hazards (like shark infested ice cream) and overcoming their tendency to wander off in all directions. Avoid the evil Hench-Cows of Mr Pear! 28 levels and 4 breeds of incredibly stupid sheep present further challenges! Family game.
13, Star Wars Episode 1 Pod Racer
Race at 600 mph against 20+ opponents over 21 tracks in 8 unique worlds. Avoid methane lakes, meteor showers and Tusken Raiders.
14, Tropico
Graphically stunning strategy game flavoured with Latin American political intrigue. Uses the excellent Railroad Tycoon II, 3rd person, 45 degree rotated perspective landscape engine. With so many game options, the replayability value is tremendous; no two games will be alike. Over 85 unique structures. Keep the populace, the capitalists, the church, the miltary, the Americans and the Russians happy... oh and stay alive!
15, American McGee's Alice
Utterly wicked third person, 3D action adventure, based on enhanced Quake 3 engine. Alice answers a distress call but finds Wonderland in a befouled chaos! Devious puzzles and mazes.
16, Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition

17, Escape from Monkey Island
4th Guybrush Threepwood adventure, now in glorious 3D graphics. Returning from his honeymoon, he finds they have been ousted from the Governor's mansion and declared dead. And, there is something strangely familiar about the politician Charles L Charles!
