March 2002 Apple Mac Charts

March 02 - Once again the MacGold Mac Games chart has a new winner! Harry Potter has clearly cast his magic spell over UK Mac owners! Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone has easily beaten off the challenge of last month's victor Black & White which tumbled to fourth. The challenger's sales seemd to be affected by delays to the multiplayer patch and an update patch to correct some technical issues. Now the tech patch has been released (see news section) maybe Black & White will challenge for the top again this month.
Civiliation 3 slipped to third spot, pushed out by its biggest rival and former champion Age of Empires 2 Gold Edition. The signs are that Harry will be battle the Age of Empires 2 for top spot in April, and it will do very well to hold on to its exhalted position.
The other top positions are dominated by the heavyweights of the Mac gaming world, Alien vs Predator, Champ Manager 01/02, StarCraft and The Sims. Last month's new release Wipeout 2097 has struggled without any reviews and despite being regarded as a Playstation classic; sales have been disappointing. Perhaps that's why our charts are so full of Mac strategy games and contain so few action games. If Mac gamers don't buy the arcade games the publishers will not bother to bring the games to the Mac, which is a shame with some potentially good action games that could be brought to the Mac over the next 12 months, such as the next Unreal game. Just below Wipeout 2097 is the latest incarnation of 4 x 4 Evolution which made a quiet debut this month. It's choc full of goodies and offers tons more vehicles than its successful predecessor. Just creeping into the chart at number 20 is Quake 3 Gold edition, containing Team Arena, the Quake 3 add-on which never came out on the Mac in the UK.
