In the beginning of the game, profits are really low, so dont freak out if your money is in the negative integers. One way to make some money fast without spending any money building factories, or logging camps, or tourist attractions is to use the farms you already have built for you. Instead of having all of the farms set on corn, try switching some of the farms in certain areas to different, more profitable crops. For example, one farm may be in a position (green or yellowish-green spot) that can be fairly suited for coffee which sells for $1, 300 per load. If your profits are negative, then you can't spend any money. So, instead of waiting for foreign support, you earn money fast.

Don't worry about the economy. Use your power for the right reason-to stay in power. Don't eliminate a protester, take care of a spouse or family member. They will stop complaining soon enough.

At the beginning of the game, you have limited finds, so choose wisely when building. Do not build anything that brings in NO money (i.e. churches, schools, clinics) Instead, build a mine or a logging camp.
Build an apartment building (or at least a tenement) as soon as possible. Your citizen get *really* cranky if they have to live in shacks. Plus, they bring in rent money.
Just accept the fact that you're going to be in the red for the first five or so years, until your farms and mines start turning a profit. Keep the US and Russia happy so that you can live off your foreign aid for those first few years. Once your exports are bringing in a regular profit, build a church, clinic, and pub to keep your people happy.
Later in the game, when you're flush with money and can afford to lose a bit, build some tenements and set the rent to $0. This will lose some money, but will cut down on the number of shacks built by kids, retirees, and students.

Very simple, once you build an airport, set your ports to freighters only. This way you keep ships coming and tourists fly in which is more profitable than sailing in.

Set your economy level to the lowest one. It gives you a lot of money but then it doesnt cost you anything to build.

These are cheats you can use when playing the game. All you have to do is hold the Control key and type in :
CONTENTO - Increases happiness (for a while) by 10.
EXACTO - Allows you to set the exact amount of money you have.
MUERTE - Select a unit and use this cheat to have them die of natural causes.
PESO - Gives you a cash boost of $20,000.
RAPIDO - Enter once to turn instant building and demolishing on, and enter again to turn off. Allows you to bulid or demolish without the need for a construction office.
ECONOMICDIFFICULTY - Change the economic difficulty to whatever you want.
POLITICALDIFFICULTY - Change the political difficulty to what ever you want.

Try to buid cheap housing next to each farm so that farms production is maximized and shacks around them avoided. Also, try to build tons of houses from the beginning to calm the populace's unrest.

Soldiers are expensive and grumble a lot. Many games seem to get along just fine with no soldiers, no armouries, generals or command posts. You're only in trouble if you're doing badly and someone turns into a rebel - then it's easy to pick two high school grads from another occupation and turn them into squaddies until the crisis is over.

Your island was the Mecca of Carribean tourist resorts. Fame and money flowed your way. Then the volcano erupted and something else flowed your way... MUD! It oozed its way down the side of the volcano and right through the middle of your state-of-the-art tourist facilities. Now there's nothing left. Diversity is the key you think. You have limited funds to begin with. Resist the demands for housings, clinics and churches from the factions and the population. Build an extra construction hut, otherwise building takes forever. Then build extra farms for cash crops like bananas, sugar tobacco etc. That gets the max cash for the minimum outlay. Build roads where necessary (especially steep slopes) to speed up the movement of cash crops to your Docks.

High Schools and Colleges are significant costs plus staffing them costs a mint too. But you'll need high school and college graduates early in the game. The obvious solution is to hire at extortionate costs foreign graduates. But a cheaper one is to build an Immigration Office and to set it to 'Skilled Workers Welcome'. This ensures a proportion of all immigrants are high school and college graduates. There should be enough for your needs early on in the game.

Pubs and Restaurants rarely make a profit in the early to mid stages of a game. Early on treat them as a necessary cost to fulfill your populations needs for Entertainment. Once you have a Tourist Industry or a fair proportion of highly paid graduates you will start to see them making a profit. Once you have a tourist industry build a Gourmet Restaurant, they are popular even with lower-class tourists and your better quality citizens.
