Good review by Phil says it all really. I just want to say at the lower MacGold price it is even better value-for-money. I've played all the Railroad tycoon series and loved each in different ways. This is less original than the first two, of course, it's a sequel. But they have brought in some nice touches and of course the graphics are exceptional. Strategy games are long affairs and it is preferable to have something good to look at whilst you're playing them. Really anyone of any age will enjoy this title. Get your kids off of killing things and into the challenges of strategy gaming. Score: 8.5Readers Review by Phil Chapman
I thoroughly enjoyed this game and would recommend it to any strategy game enthusiast. Unlike the other reviewer, what I enjoyed about the game was that you have to do relatively little micromanagement and can instead focus on expanding your business either by laying new track or buying new trains - ie the strategy element rather than the tactical element.
The economic model has its glitches but it pretty sophisticated on the whole and allows for good gameplay. I guess that the thing I most like about the game is its variety. As well as loads of maps to choose from, on which you can modify settings such as the number of computer players and time period, there are also lots of scenarios which give you a specifc role to play and goals to achieve. Given that each of these games can take many hours you can play RT3 for a LONG time before you'd have to play the same game again, and even if you did play the same game you could adopt a different approach or change the difficulty and end up with a different outcome.
Best of all the games tend to reach a natural conclusion before your empire becomes too large and complex to control so you tend not to get overwhelmed with detail.
All in all a very strong strategy game, well recommended. Score: 9Readers Review by Paul Murdoch
Having heard good reviews for both the new version as well as its predecessors I picked up a copy but have been sadly disappointed. The graphics do indeed look impressive when fully zoomed in but when zoomed out (where you will spend most of your time) they are distinctly below average with lots of open expanses with not much happening in them. This though is not my major problem; the main problem was just that I found myself with to little to do. All the little tweaks and micromanagement Iām used to is done by the computer for the most part leaving me with to little to do, and while I can turn of that automation the computer does it so much better as a rule there is little point since to spend hours micromanaging to do exactly what the computer would do for you has little purpose. Maybe Iām being to picky, maybe Iām not as much of a train enthusiast as youād need to be but despite being a long standing fan of strategy games where you have to devote weeks to playing the games through this one really just didnāt grab me.
