|
Sid Meier, the creator of Civilization has taken the brilliant concept into the future with Alpha Centauri.
This compelling strategy game combines a science-fiction genre with the perfect balance of exploration, discovery, building and conquest that are synonymous with Sid Meier's legendary strategy games.
Alpha Centauri, set in the 22nd century, allows players to fight for survival and forge a future for mankind in a hostile world.
The basic storyline is that on a UN mission to Alpha Centauri, the colonists fall out during the journey and effectively split up into seven factions, each with a distinct philosophy about the new world.
You play the leader of one of these factions. Finally, when approaching the new world on board the spaceship Unity the seven factions do not wait to land but rather eject using survival pods. These land randomly over the surface of the new planet and each faction begins its battle for survival and dominance. Oh and we forgot to mention, the planet itself has more than a few surprises of its own in store for the unwary explorer...
When you have landed you must explore your landing site and your new environment. You will bump into new... er... life forms, discover useful wreckage from the crashed Unity, encounter other factions also exploring and marking out territory in the new world. Anyone familiar with the Civilization concept will know that next comes base building, unit building, more exploration, resource gathering, combat, spying, research, technological discoveries, launching satellites, alliances, betrayal, diplomacy all in a believable, brave new world.
If you love the challenge of Civilization II but are a little tired of it from playing it too much then rejuvenate your gaming sense and invest in a copy of Alpha Centauri. You're guaranteed hundreds of hours of really challenging gameplay - the computer never quits! Oh, did we mention the PlanetBuster Missiles? They are such fun! But oddly enough everyone else regards them as an atrocity against mankind? Weird, huh?
With seven factions to choose from each game has a different perspective as you have different special abilities, whether you are the militaristic Spartans, the communist inspired Hive or Gaians who are in tune with the planet and its 'special' life forms, you must master different strategies for each to win or to be defeated. Plus you get to choose your own style of government which gives you different bonuses or handicaps in the fields of warfare, research and social development. You can change government styles throughout the game and when you 'discover' new philosophies.
Network capabilities, seven factions, six difficulty levels, a random and richly detailed 3-D world generator, a full-featured map-game editor and other customisable options make Alpha Centauri infinitely replayable. The result is a most compelling and addictive strategy game for the Mac.
