Age of Empires 2 Gold Edition Description |
 |
Age of Empires 2 Gold Edition is a game published by MacSoft for the Apple Macintosh.
Regarded by many as the finest real-time strategy game on any platform, Age of Empires II has finally arrived on the Mac. Even better news, we have the Gold Edition, which means that it includes the add-on Conquerors Expansion Pack as well as the original game, Age of Empires 2 The Age of Kings. It also includes bonus maps and 'Learn from the Masters' with recorded games!
The game uses GameRanger to offer online gaming against other Mac users (cross-platform gaming is not currently available).
The original Age of Empires was a massive seller on the Mac platform but it concentrates on early civilisations. Now, with the emergence of this sequel, you are catapulted into the violence and technology of the Middle Ages.
Lead one of the most powerful civilisations of the Middle Ages to greatness. Raise your armies. Forge alliances. Grow a thriving market economy. Build wonders to stand the test of time. There are many paths to power, but only one civilisation will reign supreme.
In Age of Empires II, you can command any one of 13 mighty civilisations. These include the Britons, Teutons, Franks, Japanese, Byzantines, Vikings, Mongols, Celts and more. Each civilisation has unique attributes, strengths and weaknesses, buildings and technologies, as well as a unique combat unit based on its historical counterpart. Be sure to try them all to find the civilisation that best suits your playing style.
Raising Armies Train your people to be infantry, gunners, knights, throwing axemen, cavalry, archers and more. Control all your military's strategy and tactics in intense real-time battles. Create formations, co-ordinate attacks, flank your enemy's infantry, siege their castles and more. Forge Alliances Join forces with other civilisations. Establish trading blocs. But always watch your back, you're not the only one who knows how to double-cross! Grow a Thriving Market Economy A market-based economy lets you open up new avenues of trade with your allies and create new methods of conquering your enemies. Build a rich empire by building markets, buying and selling resources, and establishing new trade routes. Build Wonders to Stand the Test of Time Can you build the Cathedral at Chartres? Charlemagne's Palace? The Hagia Sophia at Constantinople? Keep it standing long enough and you can win the game! But you may be sure it will attract the attention of your competitors!
Campaigns The single player has a choice of playing either campaigns with multiple scenarios or playing single randomly generated games featuring different terrains, difficult setting, enemies and allies and even victory conditions. One of the more unusual features for a real-time strategy game is a time-limited game from as little as one hour! A perfect flat-out game for those evenings when you can't face several hours on the computer. Age of Empires II has five story-based, single-player campaigns which focus on historical figures and their struggles to achieve greatness. Campaigns that revolve around William Wallace, Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan, Barbarossa, and Saladin will test all of your strategic skills as you strive onward to victory! William Wallace This is a learning campaign which you are unlikely to revisit once you have learned the basics of the game. The warriors of Scotland attempt to hold off an invasion of the better-equipped English armies. Take command of the highlanders, and learn the basic concepts of Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, such as how to build an economy, how to train your soldiers and, most importantly, how to fight and defeat your enemy. If you are new to real-time strategy games you will learn all you need to know. If you have played the original Age of Empires, then you can skip ahead to new features, such as garrisoning and formations Joan of Arc It is a war that has lasted for one hundred years, and the French have lost nearly every battle. Soon the English and their allies in Burgundy will conquer all of France. The heir to the French monarchy is too cowardly to ascend to the throne. The French army is wounded and tired and has given up all hope. But in the darkest hour, a young peasant girl declares that she intends to save France. Barbarossa Can the will of one man forge an empire? Frederick Barbarossa attempts to force the squabbling German fiefdoms into his Holy Roman Empire, which he then must defend from the machinations of the Italian city states and the pope in Rome. And should he accomplish all of those feats, there is always the Third Crusade to wage. Genghis Khan The nomadic tribes of the Asian steppes spent centuries entangled in their own petty feuds until united under Genghis Khan. Within years, a highly disciplined army pours out of Mongolia to embark on a campaign of world conquest. But how can a tribe of horse archers possibly overcome the military might of Persia and Eastern Europe, let alone the technologically advanced empires in China? Saladin Outraged that the Holy Land is ruled by Saracens, knights from Europe have descended upon the Middle East in a series of Crusades. Now four European kingdoms have sprung up in the desert. The Saracen king, Saladin, rallies his troops in an attempt to drive back the invaders. In response to European Crusades, the Saracens have organised a Jihad, countering the European vileness with Saracen treachery. The once-cultured Saracens are now engaged in a barbarous war, but will it be enough to save their homeland?
This Gold Edition also includes the The Conquerors Expansion Pack. This features:
- Five New Civilisations
In addition to the 13 civilisations available in Age of Empires II, The Conquerors adds five additional civilisations to choose and command, including the Hun, Aztec, Mayan, Korean and Spanish. Each civilisation has unique attributes, buildings and technologies, as well as a unique combat unit based on its historical counterpart.
- Four New Historically Based Campaigns
The four new campaigns focus on historical figures such as Attila the Hun, El Cid and Montezuma, allowing players to ride alongside the Hun invasion of Europe, battle the Moors in Spain, preside over the siege of Tenochtitlan, or relive eight other battles that became turning points in history, such as Agincourt, Manzikert and Hastings, with such conquerors as Henry V, Yi Sun-shin and Erik the Red.
- Eleven Entirely New Units
New units include the Hussar cavalry unit, the halberdier infantry unit, the turtle boat, and the petard, an explosive kamikaze siege unit. Among the unique combat units are the Aztec Jaguar Man, Mayan Plumed Archer, Spanish Conquistador and Hun Tarkan.
- Different Map Types
To make gameplay more varied and competitive, several new maps have been added, including the dense rainforests of Yucatan and the frozen waters of Ghost Lake. All-new Real-World Maps allow players to re-create classic conflicts in geographic areas such as Italy and Japan.
- Farms That Automatically Replant
Players can queue farms so they automatically replant after all the crops have been gathered.
- Ship Formations
Ships move in formation, just like land units.
- Ram Formations
Units can garrison inside Battering, Capped and Siege Rams for protection and to increase the ram's speed and attack
- Twenty-Six New Technologies
While the standard technology tree boasts more than 100 nodes, players now can opt for additional technologies such as caravans, herbal medicine, the thumb ring, heresy, bloodlines and theocracy. In addition, each civilisation will have access to new unique technology, such as Chinese Rocketry, Japanese Kataparuto, British Yeomen and Persian Mahouts.
- Challenging New Game Choices
Players can invigorate their gameplay and experience a world beyond Deathmatch with compelling new games such as Defend the Wonder, King of the Hill and Wonder Race.
- Smart Villagers
Villagers work smarter, build walls more intelligently and automatically gather resources after constructing a drop-off building.
- Commands for Allied Computer Players
Players can use chat commands to, amongst other things, order allied computer players to attack, or pay tribute by offering resources.
